LUBBOCK — Greenwood High’s Hunter Wigington is going to Austin.
On Friday, Wigington won the boys pole vault with a height of 14 feet, 9 inches at the Region I-4A Track and Field Championships, held at the Fuller Track Complex on the Texas Tech campus. Wigington’s mark qualified him for the UIL 4A State Championships in Austin on May 14-16. Last week, Wiginton was the runner-up in the pole vault (14-0) at the District 3-4A/District 4-4A Area Meet so the sophomore enjoyed a nine-inch improvement from his previous mark.
On the girls side, Andrews’ Oceana Ridge punched her ticket for Austin with a first-place finish in the long jump (18-6 3/4). Ridge improved on her area meet-winning mark of 17-11 1/2.
Big Spring’s Carly Roberts registered a second-place finish in the girls discus (116-3), qualifying the Lady Steers thrower for the state meet.
