NEW HAVEN — Windham junior Joe Fogarasi had just cleared the pole vault bar and on his way down, he saw it wiggling.
“I brushed it a little, but I had noticed that the bar had been forgiving for the other vaulters — it usually doesn’t stay up for me,” Fogarasi said.
This time, the bar just bounced a little and stayed put and when Fogarasi hit the mat, he had done what he had set out to do.
On Monday at the State Open Indoor Track championship at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven, Fogarasi set a new Open standard for the pole vault as he cleared 15 feet, 4 inches.
Fogarasi’s record-setting vault came on his second attempt at the height.
The junior later attempted to clear 15-feet-10-inches, a new state record, and was “pretty close” to accomplishing it on his first attempt. He was too tired to try another and will now have to wait until he competes in the High School Indoor Track Nationals at the New York Armory before he will get another chance. The pole vault is not held at the New England Indoor Track championships.
Other champs
Fogarasi was one of four Eastern Connecticut Conference athletes who brought home State Open titles on Monday.
Tyler Latham of Fitch captured the 55-meter hurdles championship in 7.6 seconds while Waterford’s Julio Gil-Martinez won the 55-meter dash, making him the fastest indoor track runner in the state, as he finished first in 6.52 seconds. On the girls side, Ledyard’s Chenoa Sebastian was the only first-place finisher as the senior won the 55-meter hurdles in 8.42 seconds.
Other notable performances included a pair of nice finishes for New London’s Orrin Parke who was fourth in the 55-meter and, along with Jose Garcia, Dante Alston and Nico Ramos, had a third-place finish in the 4×200-meter relay.
Norwich Free Academy’s Connor Gralton was fifth in the boys’ 1000-meter while New London’s Francine Jacque was fifth overall in the girls’ 300-meter.
