Chinne Okoronkwo made her new coaches at Texas Tech happy last week, winning the pole vault and finishing second in the long jump in her first meet with the Red Raiders.

The Tech program put a smile on Okoronkwo’s face for the past several months by being an ideal landing spot. After winning two Washington high-school state championships apiece in the long jump, the triple jump and the pole vault and twice being her state’s Gatorade track and field athlete of the year, Okoronkwo spent the past two years at Wisconsin.

When she decided to transfer, conversations with two men’s athletes made her think of Tech.

“Once I was released,” she said, “I was sort of just sending e-mails to different schools I thought I was interested in. I’ve known (Tech hurdler) Norman Grimes for a really long time. We’ve been on USA teams together, so he always told me about Texas Tech.
