Wisener breaks Bates’ pole vault record at UNH meet

Bates senior John Wisener set the Bobcats’ team record in the outdoor pole vault on Saturday in a multi-team meet at the University of New Hampshire, placing highly in many events against Division I competition including Maine, Northeastern and Holy Cross.

Division III schools competing at the meet, all of whom had other originally-scheduled meets cancelled, were not included in the team scoring.

Wisener (Ridgewood, N.J.) cleared the bar at 16 feet, 0.25 inches in a jump-off against Northeastern’s Adam Thomas for the best performance of the day among 13 men. Wisener moved out of a tie for second place on Bates’ all-time performance list in the event, at 15-5, and past team record-holderMatt Ondra’s 16-0, which has stood as the team record since 2004.

Bates’ other highlights on the day included:

  • Junior Sean Enos (Lynnfield, Mass.) launched the hammer a career-best 181 feet and 7 inches, second among 20 competitors. Enos is now ranked fourth in Division III in the event.
  • Sophomore Rudy Pandora (Lewiston, Maine) had the third-farthest mark out of 25 men in the shot put, at 47-5.75.
  • Junior Eric Wainman (Glastonbury, Conn.) broke into the team’s top 10 all-time performance list in the 110 hurdles at No. 10, with his time of 15.80 seconds.
  • First-year Colin Kraft (Northborough, Mass.) finished the 200-meter dash in 22.90 seconds, tied for the third-fastest time of the day among 27 athletes.
  • Senior Noah Graboys (Glencoe, Ill.) finished the 1,500 meters in 3:57.94, third-fastest out of 24 athletes.
  • Sophomore Allen Sumrall (Corrales, N.M.) was the ninth-fastest out of 38 men in the 3,000-meter run, with a time of 9:00.19.

Bates hosts Colby and MIT in a home meet next Saturday, April 12, at noon.
