The High Point University women’s track & field team began the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday evening. HPU’s best finish came by Jill Marois in the pole vault with a mark of 3.45 (11-3.75), which set the indoor-school record.
It is the second consecutive weekend that the Panthers’ indoor pole vault record has been broken. Last weekend sophomore Alyssa Palenchar broke her own record with a vault of 3.40 (11-1.75). On Friday, Marois surpassed that with a vault of 3.45 (11-3.75) to lead the Panthers. Junior Catelyn Griffin was right behind her in fourth with a vault of 3.30 (10-10.00). The pole vault event has been a successful one for the Panthers thusfar this season after sophomore Alyssa Palenchar broke the HPU indoor-record last weekend. Palenchar came in sixth matching Griffin’s 3.30 (10-10.00) vault.
In the only jumping event of the day, freshman Alexis Fernandez came in ninth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.05 (36-3.00). In the only other field event on Friday, graduate student Lynee Pina placed 11th in the weight throw with a toss of 14.18 (46-6.25).
HPU competed in four events on the track on Friday. Sophomore Lilla Loránd had the Panthers’ best finish coming in 17th in the 500-meter race and second in her heat with a time of 1:20.31. Following her in the race were redshirt-junior Shannon Corbett in 23rd in 1:21.93 and freshman Jessica Wise in 25th crossing in 1:22.87.
Sophomore Katie Farina also came in 17th in her mile race with a 5:14.44 mark. Her time just beat out freshman Natalia Ocasio’s mile time from last weekend when she ran a 5:14.45.
Ocasio, the reigning Big South Track Athlete of the Week, placed 18th on Friday night in the 1,000-meter with a time of 3:05.92.
The Panthers will return to action at the meet in Blacksburg, Va. tomorrow afternoon. High Point will compete in the long jump tomorrow in the field events and five races on the track on Saturday.
