Yahner, pole vaulters shine at Widener meet

CHESTER – Gus Yahner, a junior at Northern Cambria High School, won the ages 15-16 Intermediate Boys Division in the pole vault at the seventh annual United Age Group Youth Track and Field Championships at Widener University this past weekend.

Yahner won with a height of 13 feet.

Altoona senior Kolby Koeck placed second in the ages 17-18 Young Men’s Division with a height of 12-6.

Altoona freshman Jim Luciano placed second in the ages 13-14 Young Boys Division and Altoona eighth grader Jeremy Reed was third. Luciano, Reed and champion Nick Marino of the Ambler Olympic Club who won on a jump-off, all cleared 8 feet, 6 inches, to set a meet record.

The competition was held over the course of three days and had more than 1,300 competitors, including representatives from Jamaica and Puerto Rico. All four local pole vaulters are members of the Pennsylvania Pole Vault Association.
